Episode 32: Ravellenics Fail

Hey there, everyone! It’s been a fair bit since I last recorded – I actually recorded a super short episode on the day of the Olympics Opening Ceremonies, but it was too short and interrupted, so I opted not to post it.

What’s Happening Chez Sheepish?

So, I know that we’re overdue for a January drawing, but I’m holding off until the next recording. I’ll pull January and February at the same time. I really needed to get to the post office and get those outstanding prizes out in the mail. (Which has been done – I went to the post office and dropped off the packages immediately after editing… I had to do something since rendering takes forever. Thank you all for being understanding!)

Current Roster

  • Kennebec by Dawn Catanzaro. This was a surprise Ravellenics project. Which will not be done by tonight’s closing ceremonies. I’m ok with it. I’m knitting this for fibre space for a class we’ll be teaching next term. It’s being knit out of Brooklyn Tweed Shelter in the Faded Quilt colorway on US9 (5.5mm) needles.
  • Monkey Socks by Cookie A. I started these to knit along with my lace socks class, which has resulted in a HO! Yay!! These are knit out of Unwind Yarn Company’s Journey Sock in the Waterlilies colorway – this was a part of the 2 Crafty Girls Club. LOVE IT. I’m knitting them on US1.5 (2.5mm) needles, though I probably should have bumped them up to US2s.
  • Albers Cowl by Ann Weaver. I’ve completed the Christopher Eccleston square and have started on the David Tennant square. I haven’t really been working on this, a few rows here and there at bedtime. It’s slow going and probably won’t be finished until spring. LOL
  • Hiro by Julia Farwell-ClayThere hasn’t been much in the way of working on this with all the other knitting that’s been going on. I’ve got about 2 more inches to go on the body before I start on the sleeves.

Scouting Report

  • My first skein in the Snapshot from Maine Yarn Club arrived from Highland Handmades – it’s GORGEOUS.
  • My Harry Potter bag of the month from Slipped Stitch Studios finally arrived and I love it! It’s the Sock + bag and it’s holding my Monkeys nicely. 🙂
  • My Doctor Who pre-order bag from Fat Squirrel Fibers also arrived… I am IN LOVE with this fabric. 🙂

I hope everyone has a great week – I’m going to try to make it a point to podcast on a more regular schedule, but we’ll have to see. 🙂

xo,
Holly

Episode 31: Camera Issues

Hi everyone! How have you been?? This is take two – actually take 3, but I left in the first bit from take 2, so that stands. 🙂 Camera and computer issues caused me to have to record multiple times, so I’m fairly happy that it finally worked (or at least seemed to) on this try. It’s been a heck of a week, so having this weekend off has been quite nice. With a third take, this has turned into a short episode – only 23ish minutes! (The first recording was 40 minutes. Oy.)

What’s Happening Chez Sheepish?

We’re at 175 members in the Rav group! Hooray! Remember, when we get to 200, there will be a membership drawing… If you’re not a member on Rav, why not? Join today! (If you don’t have an account on Rav, that’s another matter altogether. You should change that. 🙂 )

Current Roster

  • Hiro by Julia Farwell-ClayI finally pulled this out and started working on it during this past week. (If you follow me on Instagram, you have proof, lol.) I’ve only knit an inch, but that inch is an important start! It’s too big to take around with me, so it’s been relegated to bedtime knitting.
  • Albers Cowl by Ann Weaver. I started this on Friday after a uber-nerdy thought that a Doctor Who themed Albers Cowl was something that I needed in my life. It’s garter stitch, so it’s a fast knit – I knit the majority of the block I’m working on during last night’s Caps v Habs game. (It’s proven lucky, so it’s good hockey knitting.) I’ve meant to make this for a while now, but couldn’t think of a color scheme until now. New yarn was purchased and I’ll be using yarn from stash as well, so there’s that. 🙂

Alumni Roster

  •  Simple Stripey Socks by Me. These are finished and off the needles. I love these socks with a love that is unholy. They are almost perfect matches and that delights me to no end. They fit perfectly and… wow. I knit these toe up, using a 2-1 toe increase and increased to 64 stitches, using the techniques for a Fish Lips Kiss heel and a 2×2 rib at the top. They are taller than I normally wear, but I wanted to use up as much of the yarn as possible. These were knit out of Yarn vs Zombies Haunted base in the Monster Movie Night colorway on US1.5 needles.

Scouting Report: Stash Enhancement

  • 2 Crafty Girls yarn club. This month was a still life by Matisse. How can you not love that?
  • 2 skeins of Silver Maple Sock in The Holly colorway from Highland Handmades. It’s got my name in the colorway – how could I resist?!?!
  • Various skeins of yarn for the Albers Cowl… too many to list, really. 🙂

Random… I need a title for this segment – anyone have ideas?

I’ve decided to jump back into a large, year-long cross-stitch project with both feet. I am joining in The Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery Once Upon a Time stitchalong. I’ve almost got the January block done, then I’ll work on the border until I get the February pattern. I love how this is turning out – it just makes me so darn happy! I love the idea of a mystery stitchalong… I can do this, right??

What’s Making Me Happy

  • I got to meet Emily from fibretown on Friday at fibre space! She is just as wonderful in person as she is on the podcast. Love. 🙂
  • Michelle’s book launch was fabulous and a lot of fun!! I am so proud of her. If you are interested in getting your hands on a copy of the book (and I think everyone should – yes, I’m a friend, but I’m also a book fan and this was great), you can get one at: https://squareup.com/market/michelle-whittaker.
  • My Caps actually showing up to play last night! After 7 games of, at best, meh playing, we dominated last night and won. Now we just need to keep doing that through the end of the season… 😉

Have a great week, y’all! I’ll see you next time!

xo,
Holly

Episode 22: A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That

Hi everyone! I hope you’ve all had a good week… Mine has been busy, of course – fitting five days of work into four is definitely not easy. Hopefully you all had a great Labor Day (if you’re in the States to celebrate), mine was a fiber-y Labor Day, accompanied with lots of Pride & Prejudice (the BBC version, of course).

We’ve got a bit to cover this week – including a prize drawing! Hooray! The winner of the August “Socks, Socks, Socks!” thread is… yeah, you know I’m not going to spoil it here. 😉 If you are the winner, please PM me on Ravelry with your favorite colors in sock yarn and your address so I can get that out to you ASAP!

Current Roster

  • Bondi Socks by meI made some progress on the second sock this week, knitting down the leg and half of the heel flap two weekends ago and finally getting around to finishing the heel flap while getting Fawkes (my car) an oil change. I turned the heel while helping a friend troubleshoot the heel turn in the pattern and am now just working through all the gusset decreases. So, I’m in the most boring part of the sock. Ah, well. I’ll have Mom try it on as I knit, so I can actually knit it to the correct length. Novel idea, right?
  • Narragansett by Thea Colman. I cast this on late on the Friday of the week the podcast went up. (Like around midnight on that Friday night. I’d been dealing with video issues because of my iTunes feed – it didn’t upload correctly. Oy.) This has been working up so quickly – and has been the only thing that I’ve really wanted to work on.  Of course, it’s now too big to carry around, so I can only work on it at home. I am using some of the yarn from the Magnolia Society yarn club: madeline tosh 80/10/10 Worsted in the Well Water colorway. (I totally forgot to say that on the ‘cast!) LOVE this yarn. I have been alternating skeins throughout, like a good little knitter, so there is that, but it looks so awesome.

Stick Handling

  • I finished the braid of Polwarth from Knitters Nightmare in the Berlin colorway! Hooray! The colors are phenomenal. I navajo plied the yarn and my navajo plying needs work, but it’s still gorgeous. Sadie dyes some phenomenal colorways – I tend to say that about most of the indie dyers I buy from, don’t I? Well, it’s because it’s true.
  • So, since one braid of yarn was done, I had to put some more fiber on the wheel… I decided to order another 2 oz of the Fibery Tribbles from Gourmet Stash (along with some punis… no judgement!) and with the 4 oz I previously purchased, I am going to do a true 3 ply – I’ve never done that, before! Which means I’m going to join in with the Yarnraising New-To-You Spinalong. I’ve also never worked with alpaca, so I’ve got two entries right there! 🙂 It goes until October 31, so if you want to join in come on!

Scouting Report: Stash

  • Well, the Fibery Tribbles and punis from Gourmet Stash
  • My sweater’s worth of madeline tosh Dandelion (90% superwash merino, 10% fine linen) in Duchess. Love the feel of the yarn – it’s a fingering weight in a purple-y colorway.
  • A skein of Goonies self-striping sock yarn from Highland Handmades
  • Two Bullseye Bumps from Loop. Awesome!!!

What’s Making Me Happy

  • HIGHLANDS ON THE FLY IS A LITTLE OVER A MONTH AWAY! Yes, I might be a little excited. And I might need to get cracking on that sweater.
  • Teefury.com – I love their t-shirts: uber-geeky and really pop-culture relevant! Just be prepared to wait for them.
  • Hockey is starting up again! On Monday, the rookies from the Caps and Flyers played… and I was damn happy to watch. LOVE. Our first pre-season game is Saturday night. I already have plans with beer, knitting (because spinning would probably be a bad idea), and internet.
  • Yes, I got my hair cut. I’m still getting used to it. The salon I went to was way too cool for me, but I loved the stylist, so I will brave the uber-hip hipsters and keep going. Now if I could figure out what to do with it on my own…

Have a great week! I will be recording next week, so I’ll see you all then!

xo,
Holly

Episode 21: Stash Enhancement, FTW!

Hey everyone! It’s been a while, as usual! I hope y’all have been doing well and have gotten lots of knitting, spinning, and all other crafty endeavors done – because I certainly haven’t… though there is an addition to the Alumni Roster this week. 🙂

I talk about a few things before getting into the Crafty Stuff – if you’re not following the blog in a aggregator, you may be missing out on posts as I start to use the blog as a blog as well as a place for show notes. (Don’t worry, the blog will always have to do with the ‘cast, I promise!) I’m hoping to put reviews on here, rather than take time in the recording, which will hopefully keep the time down. Also, don’t forget – you’ve still got until midnight on the 31st to enter your finished socks in the August “Socks, Socks, Socks!” thread for a prize!

Current Roster

  • Bondi Socks by meI finally cast the second sock on and promptly remembered why I don’t knit socks on DPNs all that often. I grabbed my Chiagoo Red Lace circs in a US1.5 (2.5mm) and went to town. One thing I remembered about 2″ in? I knit looser on the Karbons, which is what I had started in and knit over half of the first sock in. So, this sock might be a little snugger than the first for Mom… she’ll love them anyway, right? I’ve made the decision to rip back the toe on the first sock and knit the foot longer, but I can’t stomach that right about now, lol.

Alumni Roster

  • Brickless by Martina Behm. I finished this in 15 days. 15 days. That is almost unheard of, in my world. I could have gotten this done in fewer days if I had just pulled it out and worked on it more. This really was potato chip knitting for me. I really didn’t want to put it down once I picked it up – and it was so easy to remember. I finished this on Monday, just in time to squeak in under the deadline for the  Knitabulls’ Brickless KAL with Sadie of Yarnivore. I knit this out of a skein of Storied Yarns’ Superwash Sock (75% SW Merino/25% Nylon) in the Condescending Wonka colorway. I love how this came out. I was left with a tiny ball of leftover yarn – maybe it will be enough to knit a square? Yes, I still need to block this, but I’m still calling it finished.

Stick Handling

I finished the braid of fiber from Fibernymph Dye Works – and it is lovely once spun up. It’s a little itchy, but I’m hoping that will soften up with a good soak and thwack.

Scouting Report: Patterns

I swatched for three of four projects (yes, one of the swatches did double duty and worked for two sweaters) and posted a poll in the Rav group on which I should make next… because Maine is a little chilly in October. I think I’ve decided to cast on Narragansett by Thea Coleman of Baby Cocktails, as it’s a worsted weight sweater and should knit up quickly.

Scouting Report: Stash Enhancement

Yeah, retail therapy happened. I hate it when I fill a cart and Paypal just kicks in like that. Oops.

What’s Making Me Happy

There are so many things – too many to list! One big thing? Just over one month until the NHL Regular Season start. (You know, in case you’ve forgotten about my hockey love.) Our first game is on October 1, against the current Stanley Cup Champions in Chicago. Yeah, we’re going to lose that one, but honestly, I won’t care because hockey will be back! (I’ll care for our first home game against the Flames on the 3rd, though.)

Have a great week, everyone! I’ll see you soon!

xo,
Holly

Episode 14: Trying Something New

Hey everyone! Hope y’all have had a great week – mine has been stressful, but hopefully, it’ll ease up soon. This week we have two special guest appearances: my parents’ cat Jimmy and George decides to make a cameo – to remind everyone that he’s really the star of the podcast. 😉 Thanks so much for the suggestions and feedback – I’m always looking for more! A few of you have told me that you want to see me do more reviews and tutorials, so what would you like to see? Would you want them in separate “specials” episodes?

Current Roster

  • Célia by Arianne Caron-Lacoste. This has gotten a little work on it this past week – I’m almost done with the straight rows, so I’ll be working on some shaping soon… It’ll be coming with me on my work trip next week, so there may be some train knitting in my future.
  • Celestarium by Audry Nicklin. Yeah, this is still in the same spot as it has been.
  • Doctor Who Inspired Socks by me! I am working on the heel of this one, which hasn’t been the easiest. It’s a gusset/heel flap heel and trying to get the numbers to work has not been easy. I’m playing with it and as soon as I can work through it successfully, I’ll write up what I have and send it to the people who have generously offered to test knit it. (LOVE y’all!)
  • Bowties are Cool by Mandie Harrington. I am knitting on these for the Knitting in Circles March Pop Culture Madness knitalong. Of course they’re pop culture – they were inspired by the Doctor! I am knitting these out of The Uncommon Thread’s BFL Sock in the Debauchery colorway. Yes, another red. What? This Doctor wears a red bowtie.

Stick Handling

It’s been so long since I’ve had anything to talk about here! I am working on some mixed BFL from Highland Handmades, which is lovely. My spinning is not doing it justice, but I am determined.

Scouting Report

  • I managed to score some delightful yarn from Hiwassee Creek Dyeworks. Yeah, two Sassafras Sock skeins in Rainbow Brite and a white/grey mix came my way… also a skein of her MCN in Driftwood. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
  • My last shipment in the Cloudlover fiber club came – it’s gorgeous, but I really need to learn to spin well first. I may have a small problem with fiber.

What’s Making Me Happy

  • I’ve been doing a lot of teaching recently and I’ve got to say, that I’ve been really happy with that.
  • I’m looking forward to my two upcoming work trips – nowhere fancy, just Atlantic City… but there are no yarn stores in Atlantic City!! BOOO!

Have a great week, everyone! The next time I see you, I’ll probably be in Atlantic City… in a REALLY tacky hotel. LOL!

xo, Holly

Episode 13: Late Night Ramblings

Hello everyone! It’s been too long – again – but here I am! 🙂 It’s been a hell of a couple weeks, it’s not like it’s even going to get any easier, but I needed to talk to y’all! How have you been?? Me, well, work and teaching have been taking up all of my time lately, but I’m not really complaining. It just sounds that way. On the bright side, I’ve started a new design – which you get a sneak peek of! 🙂 So, let’s jump in and get started…

Current Roster

  • Célia by Arianne Caron-Lacoste. This hasn’t been worked on at all this week. I only showed it because I know that CronicKnitter needs her gorgeous red fix! 😉 I do need to get some time logged on it though…
  • Celestarium by Audry Nicklin. This has actually gotten some work on it this week. Surprisingly, it was the perfect thing to work on while teaching – lots of stockinette with just a few decreases/YOs/beading, super easy to work on.
  • Doctor Who Inspired Socks by me! A new design, inspired by the gorgeous String Theory Hand Dyes in the Snow White’s Dress colorway, which I think is a perfect TARDIS blue. The name will be announced when the pattern is ready and will be an homage to the Tenth Doctor. I’m knitting them toe-up, with a reverse heel flap, using my new Knitters Pride Karbonz needles in US1/2.25mm.

Alumni Roster

  • Simple Stripey (Hockey) Socks. Done, done, done! They even have ends woven in and everything! WOOT!

Scouting Report

  • Next up will the Bowties are Cool socks by Mandie Harrington. It’s a free pattern on Ravelry and I’ll be knitting it out of The Uncommon Thread BFL Sock in the Debauchery colorway. I’m not working on these until March – that’s when the Knitting in Circles Pop Culture KAL will start!
  • I finally got my skein of Trailing Clouds Bluefaced Leicester Self Striping yarn in the Mind the Gap colorway. Oh my goodness! LOVE!

What’s Making Me Happy

  • Knitters/crocheters/spinners really are the best people in the world. Thank you for your concern on the two week break and for your awesome Plurks when I wasn’t feeling my best.
  • I’ll get to do a little travel for work in a few weeks – just up to Atlantic City – but I’m planning on recording while I’m there. It doesn’t look like there are any LYS’s where I’ll be – since I’m taking the train up and won’t have access to a car. (Mom, you should be happy about that one, right? Hahaha!)
  • RAP Tuesdays. I’ve taken part the past couple of Tuesdays and oh my goodness – there’s nothing like the feeling of happiness you get when you get those emails saying you made their day. 🙂 I may have been a little misty over a couple of them.

That’s about it for this week… There were a few tangents taken that I just can’t remember 24 hours later, heh. Have a great week, everyone!

xo, Holly

Episode 11: The One With the Pictures

Hi everyone! It’s been a week around here… if you know what I mean. I made time to record yesterday morning, but didn’t get around to editing until last night. It took a while to render out. Oh well. I’m going through a slightly different editing process, so let me know if you see anything weird happen. Also, I’ve added photos to the end of the Current Roster projects… What do you think? Should I do something like this each week?

Current Roster

  • Célia by Arianne Caron-Lacoste. Not a lot of progress was made on this this week… but for once, it’s not completely my fault. I mean, yes, I didn’t really work on it this week, but when I did, my Hiya-Hiya Sharps came apart in my hand. It’s on waste yarn right now. I’ll get around to getting a replacement needle tonight or this weekend. On the bright side, it fits as it should. It’s going to be big and slouchy – and I’m ok with that.
  • Celestarium by Audry Nicklin. This did not get touched at all this week. I just haven’t had the time or the inclination to work on it. I do need to get back to working on it, though!
  • Simple Stripey Socks… Again. This definitely got the most work this week – I am past the heel and knitting happily along the foot.

Scouting Report

So my friend Michelle and I drove down to Richmond, VA to visit a yarn shop in that area, The Yarn Lounge. I thought about taking video there, but I didn’t know how it’d go over, so I decided not to. I did, however, get a few small lovelies:

  • Malabrigo Arroyo in the Pocion colorway. Love this, but I need to find a purpose for it. I’m thinking a hat, perhaps?
  • A new to me yarn from Honeybee Yarns (I’m not sure if that’s right, but it’s not on the tag, so I’ll have to check my receipt) – it’s a fingerweight superwash merino… I’m thinking that these will possibly be cable-y sock goodness.
  • The newest (and limited edition) scent of Eucalan, Wrapture. It’s scented with one of my all time favorite smells, night blooming jasmine. Happy!! 🙂

What’s Making Me Happy

Happy birthday to all the January Rav group members! (I don’t have my list in front of me today, but when I do, I’ll update it!)

Happy 200th Anniversary to Pride and Prejudice! One of my all time favorite books. For an awesome, modern day adaptation, try watching The Lizzie Bennet Diaries on YouTube. Awesomeness. (The link leads to a playlist for the first 10 episodes.)

Have a great week, everyone! I’m off to get some work done… and some knitting done. 🙂
